You can't beat arriving on a summit with a great view--unless you've arrived on one with an open fire tower. Once the outposts of solitary fire observers, many of these structures have disappeared from the forest landscape, their fire-spotting function replaced by surveillance flights and other cost-effective means of fire detection.
