America sycamore Platanus occidentalis A very fast growing tree grows as tall as 75 ft with a spread of 50-70 feet wide. This makes a very nice shade tree. The largest native hardwood tree in North America, Sycamore is easily identified by its large leaves and beautiful white under-bark which appears as the tree ages and the outer bark exfoliates. It is found in floodplains or along rivers and stream, however, they are quite adaptable to drier conditions once established.  Rapid growth and tolerates wet and compacted soils. Prefers moist soils that don’t dry out. White bark peals off in patches. Has a Pyramidal shape when young and develops into a spreading rounded crown as it gets older. Leaves are alternate and simple.They make quite beautiful specimens in the right landscape!! Uses: planted in areas which appear to be unsuitable to plant growth, in areas of low soil oxygen and high pH. Large shade tree. Grass doesn’t grow well under it.  Used to make bowls and wooden spoons. Fun Fac
