Dated 1876, bronze spread eagle standing on rocks with engraved shield reading "Cast From Copper Plates that the Stock Certificates for the U.S. Centennial International Exhibition Given at Philadelphia in 1876," attached to engraved steel base reading "Hon. John Sherman," circular base with exact same engraving as shield, 6 in. H, 8 1/2 in. W. John Sherman (1823-1900) was a Civil War general, lawyer and politician. He was the younger brother of legendary Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman. He was noted for his handling of foreign affairs especially with England, gaining him the title "friend of England." He was noted for his bettering of the District of Columbia, 6 in. H, 8 1/2 in.
