Desert DPM & Its History Desert DPM was developed by the British Ministry of Defense in the early 1980s. The American military had just began issuing Six-Color Desert ("Choccy Chip") to troops in the Sinai and other arid environments. And so the British MOD to began work on Desert DPM. They recolored Woodland DPM using four shades of brown and tan. This version became widely used by Saddam's Iraq, among other smaller nations. The four-color pattern wasn't immediately issued to British troops as there were none deployed to desert environments at the time. Potential problems with friendly fire and enemy misidentification during deployments to the Middle East and Asia due to the wide use of four-color DDPM created the need for a three-color variant.
