The single-seat F/A-18 Hornet is the United States Navy and Marine Corps premiere strike fighter, and fills a variety of roles; air superiority, fighter escort, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), close and deep air support (CAS/DAS), interdiction, and forward air control (FAC).The Hornet has exceptional maneuverability and superior turn characteristics, allowing it to hold its own against any adversary. The first "C" version was delivered in September 1987, and the ability to perform all-weather night attack missions was added in later production lots. "C" models are equipped with a pod-mounted AN/AAR-50 thermal imaging navigation set, AN/AAS-38 Nite Hawk FLIR targeting pod, and Cat's Eyes pilot night vision goggles.F/A-18 C also carries ground-mapping radar with a Doppler sharpening mode to generate ground maps in poor visibility conditions.
