The factory oil cooler is a liquid-to-liquid cooler that is designed to use the engine coolant to draw heat out of the oil. A clogged cooler can greatly reduce the efficiency of heat transferred to the coolant, resulting in excessive heat and a loss of lubrication to engine components. Even if the stock 6.7L oil cooler is in good condition, it can struggle to keep up with modified or heavy towing applications.
