Double Toque
Tubular Knit Woollen Cap – of the French or English Voyager Sort This hand-knitted cap, fashioned in the tubular manner, may be worn in diverse ways to suit the season or the wearer’s fancy. It may be doubled, leaving the tapered end to fall rakishly to one side, or turned wholly inward and folded at the brim, thus affording four stout layers of woolen warmth about the ears. The pattern from which it is wrought is informed by a surviving example taken from the wreck of Le Machault, a French vessel of war. Such a style is proper from the 17th century through the mid-19th century—and remains both useful and comely today. Each is knit by hand from Bartlett’s 100% wool, sport-weight yarn—well-suited to this French toque, also known in English circles as a voyager’s cap. The yarn hath been preshrunk prior to knitting, that it may better hold its shape and size in wear and washing. Should your desired size or hue not be presently in stock, do not be dismayed. I shall gladly knit one for you
