Adrien de Montigny (French, C1570-1615)Le Villaige de AilNestled on a narrow expanse between a curving branch of the Semols river and a steep hill, the village of Alle appears as a cluster of homes with a church isolated on it’s edge. Alle belonged partly to the signory of Orchimont and partly to the duchy of Bouillon, and had, at the end of the 16th century, about thirty inhabitants. This view is taken from the hill of Gros Terne, on the flank of which the road from Sedan winds down into the village. The houses are closely grouped, without orchards or gardens. The church, located next to the river on the outskirts, remains in the same place today. Unlike most churches of the region, it lacks a massive medieval tower, and is instead surmounted by a simple bell tower capped by a cross.Watercolor and gouache on vellum1596 - 1598Vellum size: 20 ½ x 15 ¼ in.
