Adrien de Montigny (French, C1570-1615)FelenneTaken from the hills just below the road to the church of Givet, this view shows Felenne nestled deep in trees and foliage. In the middle ages it had been surrounded by woods, but the inhabitants had cleared many of the trees, though the soil proved to be alternately rocky and marshy, and difficult to cultivate. The road leading to the church runs from southwest towards the northeast, through the densely packed houses with their thatched roofs. The church of Saint-Pierre-aux-liens, located near the center of the village, had a slate roof with pinnacles capped by a cross and a weathervane, and square tower terminating in a tall spire.Cartouche: Le Villaige de FelenneWatercolor and gouache on vellum1596 - 1598Vellum size: 20 ½ x 15 ¼ in.  Frame size: 26 x 21 in.   SHOWING RENAISSANCE ESTATES AND NATURAL HISTORY SUBJECTS BY ADRIEN DE MONTIGNY (c1570-1615)ORIGINALLY FROM THE COLLECTION OF CHARLES DE CROŸ,FOURTH DUKE OF AARSCHOT   Adrien de Mon
