Founded in 1876, Jerome flourished as Arizona's fourth-largest city, reaching a peak population of 15,000 in the 1920s. The Great Depression and shifts in mining ownership, notably to Phelps Dodge, impacted the town's fortunes. During World War II, Jerome's copper production surged, only to decline post-war. Struggling with a solely copper-dependent economy, Phelps Dodge Mine closed in 1953, leaving behind a population of 50 to 100 residents who transformed Jerome into a celebrated ghost town. In 1967, the town earned National Historic District status. Today, Jerome thrives as a vibrant tourist and artistic community, boasting a population of around 450.
