The Battle of Cowpens was a major Patriot victory in the Southern Campaign of the war. It was fought on 17 January 1781 in an open field near Cowpens, South Carolina (current day Chesnee, South Carolina is the closest town now). The American victory started to turn the tide in favor of the Americans in the south, where the bulk of the fighting in the war had shifted to. The British were led by Lt Colonel Banastre Tarleton, known for his aggressive actions and brutal treatment of Americans (recently made famous as the main antagonist in the movie The Patriot).
