The males are yellow in color and can range from a vibrant hue to a darker golden coloration. Their tails are a brilliant blood red which earned them an alternate common name of Redtail Triggerfish. Females are also yellow, but lack the red tail. Both sexes have horizontal blue lines along their faces and a multitude of crosshatch shaped lines covering their bodies. Juveniles will be more green in color.
