It was used on the Eastern and Western Fronts from mid-1943 to the end of the war in May 1945.. It was designed to counter the Soviet T-34 and replace the Panzer III and IV. In 1944, it underwent a name change to PzKpfw Panther, reflecting a streamlined designation after Hitler's directive to remove the Roman numeral "V."
