Penstemon hirsutus Commonly called Hairy Beardtongue. Penstemon is a large group of flowering herbaceous perennials that are mainly native or cultivated to the eastern half of the United States and a large portion of North America in general. Often rated as one of the best pollinators, Penstemon feature large flower spikes covered with small, tubular flowers that bloom in a variety of colors in spring and early summer. They are popular with pollinators due to their tubular shape; pollinators with long tongues can easily reach and harvest the nectar.  Penstemon do well in dry, hot settings, but can thrive in nearly any soil condition so long as they are getting sun. Penstemon hirsutus is a variety that features light purple-lavender flowers atop stems that are sometimes reddish in color. It grows 1-2' tall and about 12" wide. It will typically look best if planted in clusters of 3 or 5, near the front of your garden beds. Great perennial for layering among other pollinators. Pairs well
