The chorale based organ works include the great chorale fantasias, but also traditional compositional forms such as the chorale variation and the chorale ricercar. The two compositions of the "Magnificat primi toni" belong to the genre of the chorale toccata, in which toccata sections and fugues alternate. The chorale preludes, with their expressive figurations in the upper voice and fugal interludes, belong to Buxtehudeʼs late works.
