Antique Chinese Gilt Bronze Buddha Shakyamuni 釋迦牟尼佛 Teaching Charity, Vitarka and Varada Mudra Circa: early 19th Century H 4.5 in. (11.5 cm), W 3 in. (7.5 cm), D 2.5 in. (6.5 cm) Very good condition. Shakyamuni (sage of the shakyas) is the name of the historic Buddha, a prince named Siddhartha Gautama who in the 6th century 563 B.C. became the Buddha, one who has achieved a state of perfected spiritual enlightenment. Cast in solid bronze, this illuminating gold-gilded Buddha is dressed in symmetric Chinese style monk robe, seated in Padmasana lotus posture, his right hand raised in teaching mudra, and left hand rested on his knee in charity mudra, his face with benevolent expression, delicately arched eyebrows, pearl-shaped circular urna, almond-shaped eyes slightly downcast, a smiling bow-shaped mouth, and a seal of the Buddha’s Heart 佛心印 in the form of a left-turning swastika (svastika) on his chest.
