60" x 48" Luxuriously appointed Persian Tabriz rug. Golden hues are the principal colors supported by blues, greens and and soft orange tones. High knot density. Wool on cotton foundation.  This Tabriz rug displays a central medallion format based on a classic tradition. The reverse side of the rug shows the original colors which are much stronger than the colors presented on the surface. It is likely that the muted tones of color have been created by chemical washing, rather than a natural fading process. It was a common practice during the early 20th century for rugs to be chemically washed to tone down the colors in order to suit the demands of a newly emerged western market, where more muted tones of color appealed to sectors of this new market. Black woven lines within the rug are to be the unknown weavers signature. Great condition. Some wear through out. The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia was the earliest Capital of the Safavid Dynasty, (1502 - 1736), and has a known weaving
