Choice Very Fine Emperor Trajan Roman Empire silver denarius coin. Struck at Rome between 114 to 117 CE, 18.5mm, 2.94g, RIC 340, RSC 271. Colorfully toned. Certified by NGC to Ch VF Strike 4/5 Surface 3/5. Obverse:  IMP CAES NER TRAIAN OPTIM AVG GER DAC PARTHICO, laureate, draped bust, right.  Reverse: P M TR P COS VI P P S P Q R, Mars, helmeted, naked except for cloak round shoulders, advancing right, holding oblique spear in right hand and military trophy over left shoulder in left hand. Mars was the god of war. He was second in importance only to Jupiter and he was the most prominent of the military gods in the religion of the Roman army. This reverse type likely associated with the Roman Legion's triumphs over Parthia.
