Issued Dec 172 to Dec 173 CE (TRP XXVII, IMP VI), RIC 277v (not listed as cuirassed bust), RSC 296b (cited in BMC from the Reka Devinia hoard), Foss 50. Historic Commemorative emission to celebrate the defeat of the German tribes and pacification of the frontier. Superb bearded, cuirassed portrait, rare variant. Certified by NGC to Ch XF Strike 5/5 Surface 4/5 (high subgrades). Obverse: M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVIII; Laureate, cuirassed bust right. Reverse: IMP VI COS III, German Captive seated right, trophy of arms behind. Trophy of arms comes from the ancient Roman tropaeum, military victories were commemorated with a display of actual captured arms, armour and standards.
