USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 7–9 Native Range: Central and southern China Soil: Moist, well-drained, acidic soil; rich in organic matter Light: Partial to full shade; tolerates morning sun in cooler climates Height in the Garden: 6–10 ft (occasionally taller with age) Attributes: Evergreen shrub with dense, bushy form and leathery, glossy, elliptic leaves that emit a sweet, spicy fragrance when crushed. Produces starry, rose-pink flowers in late spring to early summer. Notes: !!The fruits and seeds are likely toxic; do not consume!!A great choice for woodland gardens, shaded foundations, or screening in dappled light. Tolerates high humidity and performs well in Southern gardens. Deer-resistant and relatively pest-free.
