Magnolia figo 'Port Wine', Banana Shrub.
USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 8-10, ok to zone 7. Native Range: Taiwan Soil: Moist, well drained, neutral to acidic. Light: Part shade to full sun Height in the Garden: Up to about 15' Attributes: Broadleaf evergreen, lustrous foliage. Abundant, light purple or maroon, highly fragrant flowers in mid spring. Dark gray, smooth bark. Notes: M. figo 'Port Wine' is an astounding garden plant and bonsai candidate. The lustrous, medium to small foliage totally pushes my buttons and has a slightly tropical look to it that fits in well in temperate gardens. The flowers are in scale with the foliage; they're not huge, but are quite visible when present and have a massive olfactory impact. Their sweet, banana scent wafts far and wide throughout the garden and neighborhood. Uses: Bonsai, fragrant garden shrub to plant near windows and paths so the scent can be enjoyed, screening.
