USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 4 Native Range: Caucasus Mountains, Asia Minor. Soil: Well drained, low pH. Light: Full sun to light shade. Mine are in 50% shade. Too hot here. Height in the Garden: Up to 60'. Attributes: Picea orientalis has the shortest needles of the genus Picea. It is a beautiful tree with dense foliage and branching. It is slow, but steady growing. There is an stunning example of Oriental Spruce at Green Lake Park in Seattle, Washington. Notes: An excellent choice for bonsai and has been easier to grow than Picea glenhii, or Ezo Spruce, here in the hot hot foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Uses: Bonsai, Specimen tree.
