In this complete lesson, students will differentiate between physical and chemical properties, and physical and chemical changes in matter. The second concept is to master an understanding of the physical property, density, in a way that goes further than just mass/volume. Students will understand that density is a measure of how tightly packed particles are in a substance, and that since all matter has mass and volume, density is a unique, identifying property of all matter. Students will evaluate density through calculations, particle drawings, and graphing. There are two PowerPoint presentations, honors and standard, along with the honors student notes and the standard student notes. Look through both and determine which is most suitable for your students. Most chemistry students should have an in-depth experience with density from middle school and physical science, however, when asked to define density, they will often answer “mass/volume”.
