For flute, marimba, violin, and cello. Melodies of a Flute was inspired by the poetry of Li Qing Zhao, arguably the most important woman poet in the history of Chinese literature. Li was audacious in expressing her deep feelings, although in the Confucius tradition, expression of love and passion was considered taboo. The first movement, Flute and Phoenix, captures the mood of longing in which Li channels an old myth to utter her melancholy on the departure of her soul-mate husband to a far-away post. The second movement, Lotus Flowers, came from a poem in which the author accounted a spontaneous boating race and lost her way among the lotus flowers. — Bright Sheng
