
Hawk Necklace - Made to Order
In Spring of 2021, I read Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. In the book, there was a small passage where she referenced the now extinct French verb, “reclamer,” which translated to something along the lines of “to call a hawk back to the glove.” Of course, the author wasn’t using it to talk about birds but instead personal power - bringing it back to our bodies, to our centers. That idea got itself stuck down in my very bones. I started sketching - drew the word as a bird. The “r” is the head, the rest of the letters flowing from wingtip to wingtip. Later, I took that sketch and made a little watercolor to keep on my bench. What followed was a whole series of watercolor word-animals. The following spring, out spilled a poem. But my first, initial sketch - it was the cleanest visual iteration of the idea. I’ve honestly thought about getting it tattooed on my body, but when I pulled it out a few months ago it was also just the right size for a little necklace. So I
