P-51D ‘Little Doc’ (s/n 44-14379) participated in one of the few aerial combats between Luftwaffe Me 262 jet fighters and Allied fighters during World War II, on April 5, 1945. P-51s of the 20th FS intercepted Me 262s of JG 7 that were attempting to attack a B-17 Flying Fortress formation on its way to Berlin. Possibly damaged by an R4M rocket, Lt. John Cowley was forced to bail out of ‘Little Doc’, and while he sustained minor injuries, he was back in action the following week. The remains of his aircraft were partially excavated by retired Belgian Air Force Colonel Christiaan Vanhee in 2004.  Ready-to-hang framed display measures 13x19-inches overall - artwork size 11x17.  Signed & numbered.
