Sunrise at Esau Jenkins Bridge 30 X 40"

Esau Jenkins was a sea island resident, a successful farmer and a man of vision who recognized the importance of education and knowledge. As an African-American raised in a segregated south, he saw a need to further the studies of his own children and those in his area, and used his own resources, provided by his own hard labor, to provide transportation to schools in Charleston. Furthermore, he became a notable civil rights advocate and helped to breakdown barriers that existed for those who were denied access in his day. For that reason, when a bridge was designed and constructed across Church Creek, linking John's Island to Wadmalaw Island, he was honored with its dedication 6 years after his death in 1972 . Beautiful lowcountry scenes are observable at different tide levels as well as different seasons from this bridge as long as one takes his time crossing this bridge.
