ViaDye Red Fixable Viability Dye is recommended for dead cell discrimination. It is an amine reactive dye that is impermeable to live cells(1). Dead cells, with their compromised plasma membranes, will preferentially take up the dye. The reactive nature of the dye allows for forming covalent linkages to intracellular proteins.
