Testing alkalinity in a reef aquarium is essential for maintaining a stable environment for corals and other marine organisms. Alkalinity helps buffer pH and supports coral growth by providing the carbonate and bicarbonate ions needed for skeletal formation. To test alkalinity, use a reliable test kit, which typically involves adding a reagent to a water sample until a color change indicates the result. Readings are usually in dKH (degrees of carbonate hardness) or ppm (parts per million). Ideal alkalinity levels for a reef tank typically range from 7 to 11 dKH, we recommend 8.9 dKH. Testing regularly helps ensure water stability and allows adjustments through supplements if needed.
