Antique firkin lidded sugar bucket with handle. The stave wood construction, U-shaped swing handle, lapped wood bands and wood lid are typical of the original sugar buckets from the mid to late 19th Century. Firkin is an old English term related to a form of measurement (butter, liquor was sold by the firkin - 1 quarter of a barrel).
