Artist: Asai Chu (1856-1907)Title: Woman from Ohara Selling Kindling Oharame 大原女 Date: 1911 Western-inflected scene of a Japanese woman from Ohara balancing a large bundle of kindling on her head. Although she wears traditional Japanese clothing, her green complexion and features and the way that the garments are depicted all feel very western. This work was inserted into volume one of Kyōto no maki of the three volume set of "sketch tour" books titled Kinai kenbutsu (Scenes of the Inner Provinces), published by Kanao Tanejirō (1879-1947) (the publishing house Bunendō) in 1911 and 1912. With the double fold of a kuchi-e type work. Woodblock print. Condition: Very good impression and color. Good condition. With the folds that are characteristic of this type of work as well as creasing and areas of damage to paper.
