Indian Thyme Oil is extracted from the seeds (which are also the fruits) of the Trachyspermum ammi plant, a small annual herb native to India and the Middle East. It’s also known as Ajowan. The common name “Indian Thyme” is given because it has a strong, thyme-like aroma, but it is not a true thyme oil. True thyme oils are extracted from the Thymus genus of plants, while Trachyspermum ammi is a member of the Apiaceae family. Both Indian Thyme and Common Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) are rich in Thymol. (In fact, Indian Thyme has a higher Thymol content.) Both oils contain gamma-terpinene, p-cymene, and beta-pinene, as well as other volatile compounds.
