I've been thinking about how I want to approach the month of February as an artist, a business owner and a human being in the world. It's so hard to parse through all the information flying at us right now, much of it terrifying and strange to the point of being ludicrous. But, here we are, doing our best to put one foot before the other and keep going. I have often thought it is beautiful that both Black History Month and Valentines Day fall in the month of February. While I have struggled with feeling as though the cupid-laden holiday capitalism would sell us is a distraction from what should be a time to honor the legacies of Black Americans throughout history, I wondered how I might be able to shift that lens. If I choose to engage with Valentines Day as an invitation to Love, and I sit with that idea as informed by the work of bell hooks, might that not directly engage with Black History in a way that could be useful?
