John Butterfield (1801-1869) founded several companies, including American Express and The Butterfield Overland Mail Company. Butterfield’s stagecoaches traversed foreboding deserts and majestic but dangerous mountains to communicate news and deliver mail all the way from Texas to California. The Butterfield stagecoach featured in this painting was an unwelcomed visitor to the beautiful mountain region the Native Americans called home. Friberg’s mastery of the horses’ movement is the true highlight of this painting. Image: 20” x 32” on paper
