Renowned for its vibrant spring display, pinxterbloom azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides, formerly Rhododendron nudiflorum) is a deciduous shrub native to the southeastern US.  Loose clusters of fragrant pink and white flowers open in early spring before leaves emerge. Flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Hardy in zones 4 to 9, pinxterbloom azalea grows to a height of about 6 to 8 feet and 4 to 6 feet wide. It is one of the easier native azaleas to grow and is tolerant of soil compaction and drought. The plant prefers well-drained, acidic soil and thrives in partial shade to full sun, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens or shaded borders. Additionally, it is relatively low-maintenance and can adapt to a range of soil conditions as long as drainage is adequate.
