The area had long been a meeting place for various Indian tribes, and was settled in modern times principally by American soldiers after the Revolutionary War. Presbyterian missionaries were in the area from about 1790 on, a church was founded in nearby Cooperstown and at Oneonta in 1798, and in Unadilla in 1823.
