Father Baker changed his name after converting to the Roman Church. He was educated at Princeton University and ordained to the Episcopal priesthood in 1846, and was a pastor in Baltimore. The influence of the Oxford movement led him to convert and become a Catholic in 1853. In 1856 he was ordained a Redemptorist Priest.
