Father Baker changed his name after converting to the Roman Church. He was educated at Princeton University and ordained to the Episcopal priesthood in 1846, and was a pastor in Baltimore. The influence of the Oxford movement led him to convert and become a Catholic in 1853. In 1856 he was ordained a Redemptorist Priest. He followed Father Isaac Hecker into the newly-founded Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle, and was a ze
