Philadelphia, began his ministry in the Lutheran Synod, serving as a pastor for five years in Winchester, Virginia.  In 1848 when he accepted the post of Professor of Sacred Rhetoric and Pastoral Theology in the Auburn Theological Seminary. In 1851 he was installed as pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, Newark, New Jersey, where he remained until his death in 1888.
