These massive 98-foot double-engine diesels were UP’s mainstay hotshot power for a decade until they were sidelined by the recession of the early 1980’s. They had one last hurrah in 1984-85 when 25 of them were returned to service for about a year to help relieve a power shortage. ROAD NUMBER SPECIFIC FEATURES: #6900 The only DDA40X to be built without class lights on the long hood. It was delivered in time for the Golden Spike Centennial Celebration thus earning the series the moniker ‘Centennial’. This model represents the ‘as-delivered’ appearance. Currently preserved and prominently displayed in Omaha NE alongside Big Boy #4023. #
