Title: [Cabinet card with studio portrait of dog gazing at bird]Author: CrowtherPublication: Willoughby and Madison, Ohio: Crowther, 1900.Description: Cabinet card with albumen print containing a studio portrait of a large dog, gazing at a bird on a table. "Cabinet Portrait. Crowther, Willoughby and Madison, Ohio" at foot of card in gilt. Undated, circa 1900. Annotation in pencil on verso reads: "This is suppose[d] to be President McKinley's dog." 4 x 5.5 inches (print); 4.25 x 6.5 inches (mount). Tiny chip on one edge of the print and spotting on the verso of the card. Very Good. This dog could have been a pet dog, hunting dog, or a combination of both. President McKinley, who served from 1897 until his assassination in 1901, was not reported to have had a dog while in the White House, and this dog's association with him is unclear.
