Patron of Fathers & Protector of Houses: Handmade St. Joseph Statue
I design, carve, and cast the pieces myself. I cast them in modified gypsum (a very strong building material), and we then glaze them. The pieces come boxed, can stand or hang on a wall (there's a hook on the back, which is flat and unpainted), and can go outside. Each piece comes with a history card stating:Joseph is the patron of fathers because he was the father of Jesus. The Gospels don't say a great deal about the relation between Joseph and Jesus, though the general portrait of Joseph is of a kind and thoughtful man who loved and protected his son. The fact that Jesus took up Joseph's trade, that of a carpenter, shows Jesus' respect for his father. Joseph is the patron/protector of houses because he was a carpenter, working in the small Galilean towns of Nazareth and Bethlehem in the first century. A carpenter at that time did both small jobs--fixing doors, etc.--and larger projects like building houses. Because Joseph is viewed as a protector of houses and those who live in them
