A woman, frontal and elongated, is both subject and conduit. Her porcelain face and green eyes suggest a confidence, a vulnerability, and a detachment. She is utterly mysterious. Her hair blooms into a floriform, and her face shape echoes the sculptural flower mass on her right temple. She cradles a steaming cup, the vapor curling upward and participating in the same painterly ecstasy of the bouquet of white flowers just beside her. On her knee is perched a little bird—no, that’s an owl—no, that’s a cat/owl? The palette is ecstatic: inspired by the artist’s affection for Cézanne and Modigliani. The little cat/owl presents his companion with a potion of spices, salts, or magic essences.
