The Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock 1930 First Edition
Maxfield Parrish was an American painter and illustrator popular in the first half of the 20th century. John Jacob Astor IV desperately wanted Parrish to paint a mural illustrating the famed nursery rhyme, “Old King Cole” for the Knickerbocker Hotel, one of Astor’s properties. Parrish agreed, but the relationship was fraught with tensions. Parrish begrudgingly completed the mural, but as a snub to Astor, he painted King Cole with a sour look on his face. The mural remained at the Knickerbocker Hotel and was later moved to the St. Regis Hotel in 1906, where it remains to this day at the famous King Cole Bar.
