About this work:A wonderful, scarce woodblock by an important 20th century American female artist.This lovely woodblock depicts Washington Square Park in New York City in the dead of winter. A spiderweb of barren trees and branches flank either side of the composition, which centers around the Washington Arch. Two green buses from the Fifth Avenue Coach Company head towards and under the arch as they make their trips north to Central Park. The sky is dark and the work is illuminated by the white ground and arch.The artist, Emily Nichols Hatch (1871-1959), maintained a studio on the park, which has been the home to several other prominent American artists throughout history - including Edward Hopper.
