She sits confidently with her arms crossed and eyes gazed past the viewer. Her short brown hair is neatly parted down the middle, and a halo of light surrounds her head.The work is oil on canvas and is signed in the lower right. A partial label from the 1936 exhibition of this work at the Society of Independent Artists in New York City can be found on the reverse.While little information about Clarke’s accomplishments is recorded, she exhibited several works at the Society of Independent Artists during the 1930s and received praised from critics in her time.
