Bridge of the Gods - Large 25" x 19" x 2" Native American legends, including the well-known Klickitat's 'Bridge of the Gods' tale, explain the eruptions of Mount St. Helens and other Cascade Volcanic Arc peaks. In this legend, the chief god, Tyhee Saghalie, and his sons, Pahto and Wy'east, sought a place to settle. Saghalie created the Bridge of the Gods to reunite his family. The story continues with a rivalry over a maiden named Loowit, resulting in a catastrophic battle that transformed the contenders into Mount Hood (Wy'east) and Mount Adams (Pahto). The maiden, Loowit, became Mount St. Helens, referred to by the Klickitats as Louwala-Clough, meaning smoking or fire mountain.
