Skookumchuck - Large 25.75" x 16" x 2" Skookumchuck, derived from Chinook Jargon, translates to "strong water" or "rapids" (where 'skookum' means 'strong,' and 'chuck' means 'water'). This 45-mile river starts in the Huckleberry Mountains, southwest of Mount Rainier, flowing westward and joining the Chehalis River before meeting the Pacific Ocean. Historically, the Upper Chehalis Indians camped along its banks during summers. In the mid-1800s, Centralia founder George Washington settled near one of these Indian camps and established his homestead at the confluence of Skookumchuck and the Chehalis River. Today, it's a favored spot for picnics, gentle tubing on hot summer days, or simply reveling in the peaceful allure of the Skookumchuck.
