The work was composed in Leipzig in 1731, for the inauguration of Ratscwechsel's new town council. Bach later adapted this music as the Prelude to his Partita for Solo Violin, BWV 1006. This arrangement for saxophone solo and ensemble is based upon the BWV 29 original version, which had used organ as the featured soloist. Alternate versions of this solo as an alto saxophone solo with symphonic winds or as an unaccompanied saxophone solo are also available from Jeanne, Inc.
