It's called "Rabbit Island" because its shape resembles a rabbit's head when viewed from the shore, and it was once inhabited by rabbits. A colony of rabbits, introduced in the 1880s, lived on the island for many years, but they were eventually removed because they were harmful to the ecosystem.
