The company Luxardo started as a distillery on the Croatian coast in 1821, and made their name with a cherry liquor they called maraschino. In 1905, they started jarring marasca cherries in their liquor. During World War II, one of the family members escaped the Nazi invasion of Croatia and fled to Italy. He took with him a cherry sapling and the family liquor recipe. Luxardo has been growing marasca's and making their maraschino cherries in Italy ever since.
